domain name locates an organization or other entity on the Internet. For
example, the domain name
www.uttaranchaljalvidyut.com
locates
an Internet address for "uttaranchaljalvidyut.com" at Internet
point 199.0.0.2 and a particular host server named "www". The
"com" part of the domain name reflects the purpose of the organization
or entity (in this example, "commercial") and is called the
top-level domain name. The "totalbaseball" part of the domain
name defines the organization or entity and together with the
top-level is called the second-level domain name. The second-level
domain name maps to and can be thought of as the "readable"
version of the Internet address. |

is a Top Level Domain (TLD)? |

On
the Internet, a top-level domain (TLD) identifies the most general part
of the domain name in an Internet address. A TLD is either a generic top-level
domain (gTLD), such as "com" for "commercial," "edu" for "educational,"
and so forth, or a country code top-level domain (ccTLD), such as "fr"
for France or "is" for Iceland.
There are a limited number of predefined suffixes, and each one represent
a top-level domain. Current top-level domains include:
com - commercial businesses; this is the most common TLD
gov - U.S. government agencies
edu - Educational institutions such as universities
org - Organizations (mostly nonprofit)
mil - Military
net - Network organizations
ca - Canada
th - Thailand

long can the name be? |

A
domain name can be up to 64 characters long -- including the 4 characters
used to identify the Top Level Domain (.net, .com, .org or .edu). Do not
type the www. before your domain name when registering.
The only valid characters for a domain name are letters, numbers and a
hyphen (-). Other special characters like the underscore (_) or an exclamation
mark (!) are NOT permitted.
